St. Stephen's Episcopal Pastoral Care
Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.”
John 6:28-29

Qualities of a BeFriender
A person who can show care and concern in these ways would be a great candidate for Befrienders Ministry:
  • A person who can allow others to express their own feelings without telling them how they should or shouldn’t feel.
  • A person who is willing to sit quietly with others when they can’t put their
    hurts into words.
  • A person in whom understands what is shared is sacred, knowing that
    confidentiality is a priority.
  • A person who will give others time and opportunity to make their own
decisions without feeling a need to decide for them.
  • A person who is able to admit that they, too, experience life as burdensome
at times and find it necessary to seek comfort and support from others.
  • A person who understands and values the faith community as necessary for spiritual growth.
All BeFriender Ministry Candidates are invited into a process of mutual discernment with the Directors of BeFriender to determine whether this ministry is what they are called to do. Time commitments include 2 interviews, which can lead to participation in a 20 hour training. BeFrienders commit to 2 years of service, meeting with their BeFriended person once a week or two, and attending monthly supervision meetings.

To learn how more about the program and to receive an interview packet, contact the Rector.
